What Is Kakuro?
Kakuro is the number-puzzle cousin of the crossword in the Puzzle Page app. Instead of letters and word clues, you fill the white cells with digits 1 to 9 so that every horizontal and vertical run adds up to the target sum shown in the adjacent black clue cell. Two rules make it tricky: no digit can repeat within a single run, and every run must hit its target exactly.
If you've ever solved a crossword, the structure will feel familiar. The black cells separate runs the way they separate words in a crossword. Solving Kakuro is mostly about figuring out which digit combinations can sum to a given target in a given length.
How to Read Our Kakuro Solutions
- The grid shows every white cell filled with its final digit in blue.
- Solid black cells are the puzzle structure — they separate the runs.
- Reading down a column or across a row, each unbroken sequence of white cells is a single ‘run’ that satisfied its sum clue in the original puzzle.
Strategy Tips for Faster Solving
- Memorize the ‘magic’ combinations. Some sums in some lengths have only one possible set of digits — e.g., 3 in 2 cells is always 1+2; 17 in 2 cells is always 8+9.
- Look for cell intersections. A white cell sits in both an across run and a down run. The digit must work for both sums — intersect their candidate sets.
- Start with short runs. Two- and three-cell runs have very few valid digit combinations, so they constrain neighbors quickly.
- Eliminate, don't guess. Most Puzzle Page Kakuros are solvable purely by elimination; trust the constraints.
