What Is Cross Sum?

Cross Sum is one of the most distinctive number puzzles in the Puzzle Page app. It looks deceptively simple — a 6×6 grid of numbers and small arithmetic operators — but the twist is that there is no order of operations. Every row and every column is read strictly left-to-right or top-to-bottom, with each operation applied to the running total before the next one is considered.

The grid contains three rows of three numbers (separated by operators), and three columns of three numbers (also separated by operators). The black squares along the right edge show the row targets; the black squares along the bottom edge show the column targets. Your job is to verify that each row and each column hits its target when computed left-to-right or top-to-bottom.

How to Read Our Cross Sum Solutions

Each solution page on this site reproduces the original 6×6 grid exactly as it appears in the Puzzle Page app:

  • Blue numbers in white cells are the puzzle's answer values.
  • Operators (+, −, ×, ÷) appear in the small cells between the numbers.
  • Black cells with white numbers on the right and bottom edges are the row and column targets.
  • Solid black cells are puzzle separators — they aren't part of the calculation.

So a row like 7 + 9 × 4 = 64 means (7 + 9) × 4 = 64, not 7 + 36 = 43. That left-to-right rule is what makes Cross Sum tricky for players used to standard math conventions.

Strategy Tips for Faster Solving

  • Start with rows or columns that only use addition or subtraction — those are easy to verify and quickly anchor surrounding numbers.
  • Look for multiplication or division steps early. A row ending in a target divisible by an exact small product (like 24 or 50) tells you the operands fast.
  • Watch the column targets along the bottom. Once you've filled two rows of a column, the third number is fully constrained.
  • Treat the operators as fixed clues — in the Puzzle Page version they're given, so the only thing to find is the numbers themselves.

Why aren't the calculations following standard order of operations?

Cross Sum deliberately departs from standard math convention. Each row reads left-to-right and each column reads top-to-bottom, with operations applied in sequence as you encounter them. This is what makes the puzzle a real test — it forces you out of math autopilot.
