What Is Cross Out?
Cross Out is one of the daily word puzzles in the Puzzle Page app. You're given a small 5×5 grid — a mini crossword pattern with white cells, black cells, and a thick black outer border. Some rows and columns spell complete five-letter words; others are blocked out by the black squares. Your task is to fill in every white cell so that all the across and down words read correctly, with intersecting letters agreeing in both directions.
Unlike a traditional crossword, Cross Out doesn't give you definition clues. You work from the grid pattern alone, deducing letters from where the words have to cross.
How to Read Our Cross Out Solutions
Every solution page reproduces the original 5×5 grid exactly as it appears in the Puzzle Page app:
- White cells with blue letters are filled-in answer positions.
- Solid black cells mark positions that aren't part of any word.
- Beneath the grid we list every across and down word in order, so you can verify each intersecting letter.
Strategy Tips for Faster Solving
- Start with the longest unbroken rows or columns. A full five-letter slot has the most constraints on its letter pattern.
- Use crossing letters as anchors. Each intersection locks two words at the same time.
- Watch for common five-letter patterns. Endings like -ED, -ER, -ING (or in 5s, -OUND, -IGHT) come up often.
- Vowel placement is your friend. If a slot has consonants flanking an empty middle, a vowel almost always fits.
